This panel will address the unique legal and practical issues that arise in family law cases when a party is pregnant. Panelists will discuss how pregnancy can impact custody, parenting time, child support, paternity, and court proceedings, as well as ethical and procedural considerations for practitioners. The session will provide guidance on navigating these cases effectively while balancing legal requirements, client advocacy, and the best interests of the child under the law.

Hotline POEs and De Novo Petitions; Overview of the IV-D Child Support Program

Part I- A broad overview of the hotline process and the department's findings, administrative appeal, judicial appeal, and the unexpected interplay with juvenile court, along with a brief explanation of the central registry. Part II- An overview f the IV-D child Support Program, including both administrative and judicial processes beginning with history of the program, how a case becomes an IV-D case, the administrative hearing process, paternity and child support establishment, and child support enforcement.

KS Alternative Dispute Resolution and Legal Self-Help

In this presentation, I will start with an overview of the Kansas statutes and Supreme Court rules that govern dispute resolution and explain how they work together to guide ADR practice in the state. I will describe the purpose of these laws and rules, the role they play in setting standards for ADR providers, and what they require in terms of training, ethics, and accountability. I will then walk through the categories of approval available to applicants and explain what is required to become approved, including education, training, and practicum requirements, as well as what is needed to renew approval and remain in good standing. I will end with an update on what is happening with ADR in Kansas this year, including highlights from the Online Self-Help Center, new and updated resources, and proposed rule changes that may affect ADR practitioners and programs.

This workshop, presented in partnership with MO-SAVES, provides an in-depth overview of the services and resources offered by the Missouri Child Support Division. Participants will learn how child support orders are established and modified, gain insight into enforcement processes, and explore practical tools and legal strategies used to ensure compliance. The session will also highlight how MO-SAVES supports families navigating the child support system and connects them to additional resources for safety, stability, and financial well-being.

Understanding the Unique Legal Issues for LGBTQ+ Families

This presentation will examine the unique issues members of the LGBTQ+ community face during family planning, divorce, and other family court scenarios. Participants will learn how to protect parental rights for non-biological parents, understand common issues LGBTQ+ couples face in family court, and how to help families prepare for harmful anti-LGBTQ litigation that might affect LGBTQ+ families.

This CLE course explores the evolving role of remote alcohol monitoring in family law, with a focus on promoting child safety, ensuring accountability, and supporting recovery. Using real-world examples and evidence-based practices, we’ll examine how courts and professionals can leverage technology to reduce conflict and enhance transparency in high-conflict custody cases involving alcohol use concerns.

Mediation Ethics & AI

We all know that the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is on the rise. Hundreds of AI programs and apps are available to make life easier and tasks quicker. It is no surprise, then, that there are dozens of AI apps aimed at helping the tasks of mediators easier and quicker. However, AI is not a panacea and its programs must be used with knowledge and care. This program focuses on the benefits and risks of using AI in mediation, and discusses the mediation guidelines for using Ai in mediation published by the International Bar Association, the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services (JAMS) and the Model Rules of Professional Conduct for lawyers, including Rules 1.1, 1.6, 1,7., 1.9, and 5.1.

Attendees will receive a full demonstration of the available features, and examples of agreements and court orders currently used to specify parent and professional use of OFW.

Participants will learn how child support is calculated, identifying common inputs and adjustments, and spot frequent issues that arise when parties present competing calculations. The session emphasizes translating the numbers into clear, neutral explanations that support productive negotiation, helping mediators guide parties toward informed, realistic, and durable agreements.
